10 000 Views, 10 000 Thank Yous

10kIn November 2019, WordPress informed me that I had surpassed 10,000 views on my blog Life Under Investigation. It always touches me seeing how many people read my writing, and watched my talks, and so I thought I’d take a moment to thank everyone who has checked out my blog, and also to take a little look back at things I’ve learned through 5 years of blogging.

Should Christians Support the Extinction Rebellion?Extinction-Rebellion

Over the past week, The Extinction Rebellion has caused chaos in my city of London, as well as many cities round the world. The Extinction Rebellion brands itself as a “non-violent civil disobedience activist movement” with the aim to “peacefully occupy the centres of power and shut them down” in order to demand action on climate change and ecological issues.

Transgenderism: Where Are The Ethical Boundaries?

Set Of Restroom Icons Including Gender Neutral Icon Vector IllusIn 2015, American Olympic hero (then called) Bruce Jennner announced to the world, in an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer, that Jenner was a woman. This interview changed the world. In the past few years we have seen a seismic shift in the way Western societies view transgenderism. Only a few years ago, the prevailing view of transgenderism was that of rare idiosyncrasy warranting medical intervention and encouragement towards desistance. But now, through hard fought campaigns led by Jenner and others, most people in the UK now see transgenderism as a celebrated and immutable part of our diverse society, although significant discrimination is still widespread.

Could the Qur’an be the Word of God?Quran-Read

A couple of years ago, while I was at medical school, I attended a series of evangelistic events put on by the university Islamic Society. I had a greatly enjoyable time and learned a huge amount about Islam and the Qur’an.  During one of the events I was given a flyer which detailed some of the reasons why the members of the Islamic Society believe that the Qur’an is the true and authoritative Word of God.

Depression and Christianity

In the UK, 1 in 4 people suffer from a mental illness1, of which the most common mental disorder is mixed anxiety and depression1. Between 8 and 12% of the population experience depression in any one year1, and sdownloaduicide remains the single most common cause of death in men under the age of 352.

Depression is something that affects virtually everyone either directly or through friendships and relationships. However, it is a topic hardly ever mentioned in the public sphere- whether secular media, church settings or social situations. Therefore, many people find depression confusing and difficult to talk about at best, and stigmatised and tabooed at worst.

Is There Evidence for Easter?

easterFor most people in the UK, Easter means bank holidays, exam revision and buying overpriced chocolate for kids. For Christians, all those are probably true as well. But of course, Christians see Easter as a time to commemorate the most important event in the bible- the death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth in Israel, AD 33. So is there any truth to the biblical account of the first Easter story?

Can We Trust the Gospels?

The gospels are the first four books of the New Testament in the Bible, and claim to be gospels_1the accounts of Jesus’ life on Earth. So are the gospels credible accounts of history?

Creation vs. Evolution

evolution_fish_feet_looking_863125If there’s one topic I’m asked about over all others, it’s along the lines of “Hasn’t evolution disproved creationism?” The creation/evolution debate is one of the most intense, dramatised and media-driven apologetics debates I have ever come across. It is very different to most other debates in that rather than being characterised by scholars pitting new research, quotations and intellectual-sounding arguments and rebuttals against each other, the creation/evolution debate is commonly characterised by uncompromising extreme views, personal insults towards protagonists’ intelligences, and confident lay-person involvement rarely seen in academic discussion.
